Our Coffee Plantation

The coffee industry is a vital part of the Costa Rican economy, accounting for nearly 20% of the country’s total exports. In addition to providing jobs and income for many Costa Ricans, coffee also plays a significant role in shaping the culture and traditions of this Central American country.
Chirripo Oasis specializes in shade-grown coffee, with a production area of approximately 15-20 hectares. While we sell most of our coffee to a local Co-op that exports it globally, we also keep the finest coffee during its peak season and sell it under our Chirripó Oasis brand to our visitors. By purchasing our coffee directly from us, you get the best quality coffee and contribute to the local economy. For every coffee bag sold, we plant a native tree as part of our reforestation project.

We welcome you to visit our farm, learn about our organic coffee, and share a cup of coffee with us.

What is Shade-Grown coffee?

Shade-grown coffee is coffee grown underneath a canopy of taller trees that provide shade from the sun. Traditionally, coffee has been grown in this manner – underneath a natural forest canopy – and when done so, there are many benefits. However, pressure to increase crop yields has led to some coffee crops being cultivated in reduced shade and/or direct sunlight, which requires increased use of pesticides and non-natural fertilizers.

What are the benefits of the Shade-Grown Coffee?

Coffee that is grown in the shade is beneficial to the natural ecosystem. It contributes to the system while receiving help from it. Shade trees provide nutrients to the coffee plants and the surrounding soil, and natural predators help control coffee pests. Additionally, the shade trees help protect coffee crops from the burning sun. However, pressure to increase crop yields has led to some coffee crops being cultivated in reduced shade and/or direct sunlight, which requires increased use of pesticides and non-natural fertilizers.

Preservation of Natural Biodiversity

Why does Shade-Grown Coffee taste better?

Because shade coffee is slower to ripen, it often provides a more complex taste and is more flavorful than other coffees. Additionally, shade-grown coffee encourages pollination of coffee and other nearby plants.

What species of trees are used to provide shade to the coffee plants?

To achieve a balanced nitrogen level in the soil, it is common practice to plant native trees that provide shade for coffee trees. These trees can vary from forest trees like cedars to fruit trees like orange, lemon, avocado, and soursop. This creates a unique microclimate that benefits coffee growth over time.  lime, lemon, 4k wallpaper-1549322.jpg

Why do we use a lot of bananas at Chirripó Oasis as a shade for the coffee plantation?

Agricultural experts recommend using banana plants to provide shade for coffee plantations. This practice has numerous advantages, including optimal shading, soil preservation, moisture retention, wind protection, enhancement of soil fertility, and pest control. Besides, this intercropping system provides farmers additional income during the coffee off-season, promotes sustainable farming practices, increases productivity, and minimizes weed growth. Nevertheless, proper planning and management are crucial to ensure that the crops do not compete and to maximize the benefits of this approach.
